KATONG SHOPPING CENTRE (1973)
Katong Shopping Centre is located at 865 Mountbatten Road and is bounded by a row of shophouses. The mall is largely service orientated and offers services such as tailoring and a large number of employment agencies. Other noteworthy tenants include Teo Heng Karaoke, Swee Lee Music Company and several Cyber LAN gaming outlets. The mall also has several food outlets.
Katong Shopping Centre is situated in an area that is influenced by the Peranakan culture. The area also includes Roxy Square and several churches.
Katong Shopping Centre offered mostly textile, shoe and food stores during its heyday. It also used to house a bowling alley and a popular departmental store.
I remember visiting this particular mall back in the day! I purchased my old school uniforms from the departmental store (Emporium, isn’t it?) and did grocery shopping on a weekly basis.
Alas, this mall is definitely past it’s prime.
well thats a coincidence Mr Tan! my brother and i used to get our uniforms there too! in fact, when we started working we also got our first suits together at one of the Tailor stores there. i rmb such happy memories of this mall. i don’t get to visit this place as much anymore but i still smile whenever i drive pass this place on the way home.
and yes, this mall is defintely past its prime, though i’d say. it’s a place worth keeping. for memories sake at least.
